Huge gap in demand vs supply
Very interesting case... Read till end! Vivek was pursuing engineering from a reputed college in India. He managed to crack a campus interview and secured an IT job in the final year, a lucky guy! Though equally intelligent but Sandeep couldn't fetch a campus letter. He had no option but to burn enough calories and look for a job after having his degree in hand. And so he hunted a lot after college was over. Finally, got one in a multinational company.
His career started, and two years flied like a dream. His college days were a history now. There was no application of his 4 years of academics in this MNC, because new skill requirements of corporate world have started. One fine day he heard his boss saying, "You need to add-on new skills to come up the ladder. I'm sorry that your skills doesn't suit for the next level." This happened while sitting across for his second year's performance review.
First he cribbed the boss for disclosing this fact after two years. But soon he calmed down, and discussed the matter with some seniors. It was shocking to get a laundry list of skills in-demand. But one thing everybody emphasized was the program on 'Lean Six Sigma'. It was like a Yorker to him, because he wasn't conversant to it. Another interesting information he received about Lean Six Sigma programs was that it's equally applicable in all sorts of industries. Sandeep hasn't a choice but to fix this skill gap sooner rather than later. There are many such instances when professionals having a renowned diploma or degree in hand but succumb to the industry's demand for a new skill requirement like 'Lean six sigma.' One may think that why Lean six sigma is so important? The prime reason is because it's a versatile tool/ methodology which may be used in any type of industry (any business model).
Perhaps that's the reason why most of the fortune 500 companies like G.E, Allied Signal (now Honeywell) etc. had embraced it long back and cherished its fruits by saving large amounts of money and vital resources. Lean Six Sigma is a smart blending of 'Six Sigma methodology' with 'Lean tools' (originated from Toyota, Japan) which resulted into a synergized way of solving chronic business pain areas.
Although it's the responsibility of our education system to constantly upgrade their curriculum as per the industry demand. But, somehow that's not happening the way required. Thus causing a huge void between the Lean Six Sigma skill's demand vs. supply. It's advisable to all the professionals to undergo this 'Operational excellence program' to claim the next level in their respective organizations.
